The Rise of AI in the UK: Why Demand for Data Centres Is Growing

Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, artificial intelligence has moved rapidly into the mainstream. Generative AI is now being used across businesses and industries, while investment in the infrastructure needed to support AI is also increasing.

For the UK, this means more than developing AI applications and software.

AI needs computing power, and that computing power needs data centres.

AI needs physical infrastructure

AI systems rely on significant computing resources to train and run.

Those resources are housed in data centres containing servers, networking equipment, power systems and cooling infrastructure.

The UK Government's UK Compute Roadmap states that £44 billion of private-sector investment in AI data centres had been announced over the previous 12 months. The roadmap sets out the Government's plans to expand the UK's computing capacity and support the development of AI infrastructure.

This demonstrates that the UK's AI story isn't just about software companies. There is substantial investment going into the physical infrastructure required to provide computing capacity.

The UK is actively supporting AI data centre development

The Government has introduced AI Growth Zones (AIGZs) to support the development of AI-enabled data centres and associated infrastructure.

As of January 2026, five AI Growth Zones had been designated across Great Britain.

The Government estimates that these five zones could generate £28.2 billion of investment and more than 15,000 jobs. These are Government projections, rather than jobs that have already been created.

The programme is intended to address some of the practical challenges involved in developing AI infrastructure, including access to electricity and planning.

Why electricity matters

Data centres require a reliable supply of electricity, and increasing computing capacity means electricity demand is an important consideration when planning new facilities.

The Government's consultation on electricity connections for strategic demand specifically identifies AI data centres as part of the growing demand for new connections.

It states that timely access to electricity connections is one of the barriers facing the development of AI-capable data centres.

This is why data centre development is increasingly connected to the wider UK energy sector.

A new facility needs suitable land and buildings, but it also needs sufficient electrical capacity and the infrastructure to connect it to the grid.

Data centres are engineering projects

The servers may be at the heart of a data centre, but they depend on complex supporting systems.

These can include:

  • Electrical distribution
  • Backup power and generators
  • UPS systems
  • Cooling and HVAC
  • Building management systems
  • Fire protection
  • Controls
  • Commissioning
  • Operations and maintenance

As a result, the growth of AI infrastructure creates requirements across a wide range of technical disciplines.

Electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, commissioning specialists, project managers, facilities professionals and operations teams can all have important roles depending on the project.

AI may be digital, but the infrastructure supporting it is very physical.

What does this mean for recruitment?

The expansion of data centre infrastructure can create recruitment requirements throughout the project lifecycle.

During design and construction, projects require engineers, project managers and construction specialists.

During commissioning, specialist technical professionals are needed to test and bring systems into operation.

Once facilities are operational, experienced teams are required for operations, maintenance and facilities management.

This can also create opportunities for professionals with experience in adjacent technical sectors, including power generation, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, controls and critical infrastructure.

The exact requirements will vary from project to project, but the need for specialist technical expertise remains a common factor.

AI and the UK's energy infrastructure

The growth of AI is also bringing digital infrastructure and energy infrastructure closer together.

The Government has established an AI Energy Council to consider the energy requirements associated with AI infrastructure, alongside opportunities for AI to support the energy system.

This means the development of AI cannot be considered separately from questions around electricity generation, grid capacity and energy efficiency.

For the UK's engineering and energy sectors, that makes the data centre market an important area to watch.

What happens next?

The UK Government is investing in computing capacity, supporting AI Growth Zones and reforming the way large electricity-demand projects connect to the grid.

The figures being discussed are significant, but it is important to distinguish between announced investment, Government projections and proposed projects. Not every proposed data centre will necessarily be built, and connection requests do not represent completed facilities.

What is clear is that AI is creating a growing requirement for the physical infrastructure needed to support it.

And that infrastructure requires people.
